Site Overview:
This website is a wealth of resources, information and links for any and all types of literature that can be taught in a Language Arts or English classroom. TeachingLiterature.com provides examples of activities, bibliographies, web links, and literary texts for organizing and planning literary reading into the curriculum. There is also information on incorporating discussions, writing activities, drama, media literacy, and technology into literary lesson plans. This type of information is divided into ‘chapters’ and are listed by topic as a side bar for easy access. Generic links are also included along the top of the main page and are divided by literary groupings such as British literature, American literature, YA literature, Shakespeare, multicultural/women/world literature, lesson plans, non-fiction, poetry, and more.
Site Highlights:
A generic links section for censorship to help support teachers who intend to teach literature that is often censored due to various reasons or are facing other censorship issues.
A generic links section for teaching Shakespeare. This provides links to wonderful sites that will help teachers and students better understand Shakespeare’s poetry and plays.
A generic links section for integrating media/technology into literature lessons. This is a great resource for those of us who are not media/technology savvy.
A wide range of links and information that suit the needs and provide assistance for all genres of literature and poetry.
Site Critique/Evaluation:
TeachingLiterature.com is a great resource for beginning teachers because of the diversity of information and links to various genres and topics that many novice teachers struggle with such as planning and organization of materials. This website was easy to navigate by topic, genre, and/or subject. There was no registration or fees required to navigate this site or review its contents.
While this site did provide a large amount of very useful information and web links to various other websites divided by topic or genre, it was sometimes difficult to find what was specifically in mind due to the overwhelming number of web links and other resources provided. Prepare to spend some time reviewing the information and available links in order to locate all that may be used for lessons and unit plans. In addition some of the web links provided to outside websites were no longer valid as these sites either changed their web addresses or were no longer active.
Overall, this site is a resource for many great ideas, activities, teacher preparation information, planning and organizational materials, and links to other resources, but be prepared to spend time sifting through the information.
The following is my review of the website, TeachingLiterature.org.
